In chapter 2 which talked about the earliest civilization, one thing that stood out the most to me was the area talking about gender and its hierarchy and how it affected society. With living in a generation yet alone our society now, that is much more vocal when it comes to being gay, it makes things more complex.
I understand that work was one of the factors that determined their (women & men) stance in society. As agricultural work got heavier (literally) on women, men were brought up in the equation to take control. Although they were perceived as the masculine gender with ruling and being able to call the shots, their physical strength was needed for the work that was usually done by women. Women had less work to do.
In the text it mentioned that historians still do not know what fully cultivated the pervasive idea of patriarchy. Like historians, I am so curious in knowing what other factors lead to the impact of patriarchy because up to this day it still lives!
*ie:
-men getting paid more than women
-men having more job offers/ options due to their "masculinity"
